UI/UX Design

Sprouts and Spells uses a cozy, intuitive UI that matches its slow-paced fantasy atmosphere. Partially diegetic elements like a book-style journal and bag-like inventory add to immersion without overwhelming the player.

Concepting

Before starting I gathered an ensemble of references from pinterest and compiled a mood board using PureRef, as well creating a flow chart to plan out navigation between screens.

The chosen title screen combines the first background and fourth layout for clarity and composition, avoiding visual clutter and maintaining legibility.

Using common design patterns and the Game UI Database, the options were consolidated into one screen for clarity. Sliders improve visual feedback and consistency.

A clear visual hierarchy is created using font size, colour, and underlines, with a persistent control indicator to guide players.

The HUD avoids intrusive diegetic elements, focusing on clarity with expected features like a health bar and gauges. Prompts help communicate interactions.

To maintain a relaxing experience, unnecessary UI is removed, using hierarchy, scale, motion, and sound for clarity. The “three reads” approach ensures players only see what they need.
